Fake invoices and fake shops: how a copied domain gets used
A lookalike domain swaps one letter, adds a hyphen or changes .com.au to .com. Customers rarely spot it, because they read the message, not the address.
The most common use is a fake invoice. A customer gets an email from what looks like your accounts address, with new bank details. They pay, and the money goes to the scammer instead of you.
The second is a fake shop. A copy of your website sits on the lookalike domain, takes orders and card details, and never ships anything. Your name takes the blame in the reviews.
Sometimes the domain is registered and left quiet while it is set up. That quiet stretch is the best time to find it.
Otherwise you often hear about it last, when a customer calls asking why their payment hasn't been receipted.
