What is a UPS (battery backup)?
A battery that keeps computers, routers and terminals running for a short time when power fails.
An uninterruptible power supply bridges the gap between a power cut and either a safe shutdown or a generator. For a small office it keeps the modem, router, phone system and a till alive for 15 to 60 minutes.
It also protects against surges when power returns.
What to do
- Put the internet router and phone system on the UPS first.
- Replace UPS batteries every three to five years.
